Rhinoplasty is one of the most common and technically the most demanding procedures in aesthetic surgery. It is used to improve nose appearance and it brings back facial harmonious ratio at the same time. Numerous factors influence nose shape. Besides some hereditary factors, there are some previous traumas or illnesses that had consequences on the nose shape. During the nose analysis it is necessary to pay attention to all facial structures and integrate the final nose appearance into the facial features. Due to that, besides the nose correction, sometimes it is necessary to perform some additional procedures like chin correction in order to get optimal ratio of facial structures. Nose correction possibilities are numerous and they range from completely minimal procedures to complete reconstruction and they include nasal hump correction, nose narrowing surgery, nose tip surgery, nostrils correction or nasal wings reduction, saddle nose reconstruction…
Together with rhinoplasty, septoplasty is sometimes combined too. Septoplasty is a procedure for correcting a deviated nasal septum in order to improve breathing function.
CANDIDAES FOR THE PROCEDURE
For the successful rhinoplasty it is important to have sensible expectations and to adjust your expectations with possibilities. During the consultant examinations, our surgeon is going to listen to you carefully and after the nasal structure analysis, he is going to introduce you to possibilities that are available to you and after that he is going to plan your surgery together with you. Within the examination you are going to get a computer simulation of expected nose appearance after the surgery. Besides that, there are some photos that show previous procedures performed on our patients.
During the consultant examination it is necessary to introduce our surgeon with your health condition, possible illnesses and previous operations. It is important to mention taking medications, especially those that influence blood coagulation (which includes Andol, Aspirin…)
PREPARATION FOR THE PROCEDURE
Before the nasal correction, standard blood and urine tests are required: complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, coagulogram, urea and creatinine concentration and to record electrocardiogram (ECG). All these examinations can be done in our polyclinic. Depending on our surgeon’s estimation, sometimes it is necessary to get done some additional nasal X-rays.
ADMISSION TO POLYCLINIC
Admission to polyclinic is possible during the morning hours on the day of surgery, or the evening before the procedure if it suits you better.
ANAESTHESIA
Rhinoplasty is most frequently performed under general anaesthesia and some minor corrections can be performed under local anaesthesia.
PROCEDURE
There are two possible approaches to nose correction: opened and closed.
Opened technique has its benefits because it gives surgeon a better insight into the nasal structures. At big nose reconstructions and procedure repetitions, this technique is the best choice. With opened rhinoplasty it is necessary to perform section through skin in the nasal septum area (columella) and with time the scar becomes invisible.
Under the closed technique, you approach the nose through a section performed on the mucosa in the inside nostril area, without any visible outer incisions on the skin. Many corrections can be performed by this approach. During consultations, our surgeon is going to suggest the best possible option for you.
The procedure itself takes from one and a half hours to three hours.
IMMEDIATE POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD
After rhinoplasty outer fixation in form of cast or plastic materials is placed on the nose and the time usually taken to wear this is around 7 days, depending on the level of correction. Tampons are usually placed into the nostrils and they are taken out after 24 to 48 hours. At septoplasty it takes a few more days longer.
Hematomas and swellings in facial area are normal and they disappear 3 to 4 days later. Return to your daily routines is possible 7 to 10 days after the surgery, but it is recommended to avoid physically demanding work during the following month or so.
FINAL RESULT
All the necessary advice and further instructions that should be followed during the postoperative period, you are going to get in our polyclinic. Final result is visible after 9 to 12 months. If it is necessary, some additional minor corrections can be performed uder local anaesthesia.
