Ultrasound examinations may help with diagnosing different conditions and estimation of organ damage after disease.
Ultrasound is used to help doctors assess symptoms like:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Inflammation
- Ultrasound is a useful way to examine many internal organs in the body, including, but not being limited to:
- Heart and blood vessels, including the abdominal aorta and its major branches
- Liver
- Gallbladder
- Spleen
- Pancreas
- Kidneys
- Bladder
- Uterus, ovaries and foetus with pregnant women
- Eyes
- Thyroid and parathyroid gland
- Testicles
- Prostate
Ultrasound is also used for:
- Performing procedures such as needle biopsies, in which needles are used to take samples of cells from abnormal areas for laboratory testing
- Breast imaging and breast cancer biopsy (see page “Ultrasound guided breast biopsy”)
- Diagnosing various heart conditions and assess damage after a heart attack or heart defect diagnosis
