Eyelid correction, or blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure where skin surplus on both upper and lower eyelid is removed. It goes into the group of rejuvenating aesthetic procedures and it is frequently combined with face lifting. Eyelid skin is very gentle, thing and sensitive and due to that it ages the most rapidly. Elasticity reduction of eyelid connective tissue causes skin surplus which gives face a tired look. Together with skin surplus, often come overexpressed fat pads under the eye lids, which can also be corrected with this procedure.
CANDIDATES FOR THE PROCEDURE
Blepharoplasty candidates are all the persons who feel dissatisfied with eyelid skin surplus and overexpressed fat pads. Eyelid skin surplus, especially on the upper eyelids, can besides aesthetic problems cause functional disturbances like disturbance of vision field and cause headaches too. When planning a surgical procedure, the doctor is going to introduce you to all real possibilities of the procedure, answer all your questions and recommend what is necessary to correct in your case, in order to achieve a wished aesthetic result.
PREPARATION FOR THE PROCEDURE
Before the eyelid correction, it is sufficient to get done standard blood examinations that include: complete blood count with erythrocyte sedimentation rate, coagulogram, urea and creatinine concentration, blood glucose levels and to record electrocardiogram (ECG). All these examinations can be done in our polyclinic too.
ADMISSION TO POLYCLINIC
Admission to Polyclinic Arcadia is possible during the morning hours on the day of surgery, or the evening before the procedure. After situating you into your room, taking anamnestic data, thorough examination and detailed agreement regarding the procedure itself, marking incision lines, taking photographs and consultations with an anaesthesiologist are about to follow.
ANAESTHESIA
Blepharoplasty is most frequently performed under the local anaesthesia. If there is a need, this surgery can be performed under the general anaesthesia too.
PROCEDURE
It takes from an hour and a half to 3 hours for the eyelid correction surgery to be performed and it depends on the fact whether upper, lower or both eyelids are being operated. It starts with drawing an incision line on the eyelid, which is precisely followed with a scalpel during surgical procedure. After that, skin surplus is being removed. If necessary, fat pads are being removed too and/or hypertrophic muscles on the eyelids are being reduced. The operation finishes with the inner stitching of incision so that scar is almost invisible. For the best results of the surgery, it is important to deal gently with the tissue, to carefully stop the bleeding during the surgery and to use precise surgical technique.
IMMEDIATE POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD
Concerning the fact that blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia, you are allowed to leave for home care only 2 hours later after the surgery. During the first day placing cold compresses on your eyes is required in order to avoid excessive tissue swelling. Stitches are removed one week after the surgery. With most people, scars are barely visible after 14 days.
FINAL RESULT
Return to public life after eyelid correction is possible after 7 days. Results are visible immediately after the surgery, but it takes about one month for the lids to get their final form and appearance. Choosing an adequate surgery method and patient’s disciplined behaviour after the surgery, give extremely good results.
