b_250_250_16777215_00_images_stories_slikalabioplastike324px.jpgLabioplasty is the surgical procedure where the shape and size of the labia minora is changed, including the skin near the vaginal opening and sometimes also the skin around the clitoris. In some cases, women can have pain during sex or be uncomfortable during daily activities such as walking or running, or when wearing tight clothing.

Another reason for the procedure is the unattractive aestethic feeling and the desire to improve the experience during sex when removing the skin excess of skin around the clitoris (clitoral hood) The objective of a labiaplasty is to better define the labia minora (internal labia). This condition can be the result of genetics, hormonal influence during adolescence or pregnancy, or chronic irritation.

Labia minora reduction (internal labia):  To many patients the look of their labia minora is a source of discomfort due to their increased size. This can be the reason for pain during sexual intercourse or during common task like walking. The surgical reduction of the labia minora can improve the aesthetic aspect of abnormally increased size, which usually turns out to cause discomfort from adolescence due to hosrmonal influence and growth.

Labia majora reduction (external labia): This common anatomic variation can be more noticeable after delivery or with changes in weight. In some cases is recommendable liposuction to extract the excess of fat tissue under the skin, or doing a transfer of fat tissue to the area in case of lack of it. Skin assymetries are better addressed with surgical removal of a portion of skin in some inconspicuous area of the labia majora.

Surgical techniques are adjusted depending on each case, including different procedures to address the skin excess of the labia minora, majora and clitoral hood, restoring aesthetics and simmetry. New techniques maintain the line of pigmentation so the final look is much more natural than with other techniques previously used.

The best candidates for this procedure are women with chronic irritation or pain during coitus due to the increased size of their labia, which usually visibly "hangs" beyond the labia majora (outer labia). This is an excellent procedure for thos cases with clear assymetry or difference in size between the right and left labia minora. Labiaplasty is an ambulatory procedure that depending on the patient is commonly done under local anesthesia after waitng the effect of an anesthetic cream (EMLA) for 30-45 minutes, so the application of the local anesthetic is not felt.

After the procedure, patients can feel uncomfortable and slight to moderate local swelling that resolves by itself after 1-2 weeks. Depending on the tecknique used, scars have minimal visibility and the return to work or studies can be done after few days, though for sexual activity it is advisable to wait 2-3 weeks.
